CEM and Housing Bureau Mark a Decade of Collaboration, Providing Household Electrical Safety Inspections for Elderly in Social Housing and Promoting Electrical Safety

Macau, 9 February 2026

Companhia de Electricidade de Macau - CEM, S.A. (CEM) and the Housing Bureau have been collaborating since 2017, marking the tenth year of their partnership this year. Recently, under CEM's Community Program, electrical technicians from CEM and the Housing Bureau voluntarily conducted household electrical safety inspections for elderly people living alone in social housing. With the theme of "Safe Electricity Usage, Community Integration", the initiative focuses on promoting electrical safety knowledge and enhancing public awareness about the importance of regular inspections of electrical installations in their homes.

The activity was led by Cheang Sek Lam, Acting Vice Director of the Housing Bureau and Cecilia Nip, Director of CEM Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Communications Office. They visited 20 elderly residents in social housing, presenting festive and healthy gift packs to express care and blessings.

Acting Vice Director Cheang Sek Lam stated that over the past decade, this program has cumulatively served approximately 200 households in need. The elderly are a segment of society requiring special care, particularly those living alone who need community support. The continuous ten-year close cooperation demonstrates the high importance and sustained commitment both CEM and the Housing Bureau place on community electrical safety. This activity not only provides practical electrical safety inspection services for the elderly but also deepens the penetration of safety knowledge into the community through education, enhancing electrical safety awareness among older residents, reducing fire risks, teaching emergency response measures, and further promoting a culture of community safety.

Cecilia Nip pointed out that CEM has long been dedicated to fulfilling its social responsibilities. Through various activities, including the Community Program, CEM continuously serves the public, with particular attention to the electrical safety of the elderly. This activity specifically emphasized electrical safety education, hoping that citizens will regularly inspect their electrical installations, remain vigilant, and prevent potential hazards.

During the visits, CEM technicians not only performed electrical safety inspections but also helped to replace damaged cables, sockets and repair small electrical equipment, as well as patiently explained essential electrical safety knowledge, reminding the elderly of daily precautions. The elderly residents expressed heartfelt thanks for the professional service and warm visit from the volunteers.

The Community Program was launched in 2000, with CEM being one of the first companies in Macau to provide such services. Besides accepting referred cases from local organizations, CEM also welcomes citizens to refer individuals in need (those who receive assistance shall hold a valid Beneficiary Card issued by the Social Welfare Bureau).
