CEM promotes skill standardisation for electrical technicians

Macau, 14 January 2021

CEM has started promoting skills standardisation for electrical technicians at the beginning of this year. With the opening of the 8,000-square-foot training centre to provide training and assessment service to the public, CEM aims to provide strong support on talent cultivation and skill upgrading in the industry. The technical skill assessment provides a comprehensive evaluation based on two parts – Knowledge and Skills. Electrical technicians who pass the assessment will be recognized as excellent level in their respective specialty areas and awarded a certificate from CEM.

With the continuous development of Macau, particularly with the successive commissioning of large-scale infrastructure projects, hotels, casinos and the applications of new energy, the city has seen a rising demand for high-quality local electrical technicians. Rooted in Macau for over 40 years, and as a member of the power engineering industry in Macau, CEM has leveraged its sound experience in the industry and training facilities to launch a skill training and assessment programme for electrical engineering technicians. The objectives of the programme are to meet the city’s demand for local talents, enhance local power engineering technology and cultivate more talents to ensure sufficient and steady supply of manpower in the industry.

The skill set and required competency standards of the programme are based on the competency specifications of CEM’s own electrical technicians. A technical committee comprising CEM electrical professionals has been formed to select the parts that are applicable to the industry and determine the technical standards and requirements upon discussion with the industry. In order to provide the best customer service and ensure the quality and safety of work, CEM has always attached great importance to the professional training and employee development through the establishment of a sound internal training system and competency norms, covering conventional modules related to the basic knowledge of electricity, power safety and low-voltage equipment installation, more modernized modules related to renewable energy application, power system automation, asset management and underground facility management, and so forth. The programme will assist local electrical technicians in acquiring diversified knowledge and skills, enable them to meet the quality and safety standards required by the works, as well as to enhance their competitiveness.

Moreover, CEM will utilize its training centre, which is originally an internal training centre for its employees, to hold suitable training courses for local technicians. The centre is an indoor workshop adjacent to the decommissioned Macau Power Station. This 8,000-square-foot training centre is divided into multiple independent areas to provide trainings in different power engineering fields, including installation and repair of electric vehicle charging facilities, usage and management of measuring apparatus, installation and repair of low-voltage distribution facilities and medium-voltage switches operation, etc. The training centre can meet simultaneous usage of different training needs.

The Technical Skills Assessment for Electrical Technicians is now open for application until 10 February 2021. Before application deadline, interested parties can download online application form or fill out the form in person at CEM Building (address: Edifício CEM, Estrada D. Maria II, Macau) during office hours. CEM will notify admitted applicants by phone before 26 February. Please visit CEM’s website www.cem-macau.com for details.
