CEM Delegation Field-Inspects Shanwei New-Type Energy Storage Power Station to Deepen Cross-Regional Technical Exchange

Macao, 27 July 2026

In order to promote the technological innovation and development of Macao’s power system, facilitate mutual learning in energy storage and grid integration technologies, and enhance grid safety, stable operation, and renewable energy consumption capabilities, a delegation led by Bernie Leong, Chairman of the Executive Committee of Companhia de Electricidade de Macau - CEM, S.A. (CEM), recently visited the new-type electrochemical energy storage power station in the Guangdong Shanwei Overseas Chinese Management District for field inspection and technical exchange. This visit focused on communication and discussion regarding the operation management, energy storage applications, and engineering construction experience of the energy storage power station, as well as on-site exchanges on key technical points.

Bernie Leong pointed out that this visit helps CEM further grasp the engineering experience of advanced power stations in the collaborative operation of energy storage and the power grid, serving as an important reference for the subsequent evaluation and promotion of relevant technology implementation, as well as the enhancement of power supply reliability and resilience. At the same time, it also helps strengthen cross-regional collaboration and enhance Macao’s power system capabilities in dealing with black starts, load fluctuations, and renewable energy development, providing support for Macao’s energy transition and secure power supply. CEM will apply the insights gained from this exchange to its work planning, using energy storage development as a bond to further strengthen the synergy between CEM and the power supply sector in the Greater Bay Area. Bernie Leong also thanked China Energy Engineering Group Guangdong Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd. (GEDI) for arranging the visit.

As a new-type energy storage pilot demonstration project of the National Energy Administration and an important infrastructure for the construction of Guangdong’s new-type power system, the Shanwei Overseas Chinese Management District’s electrochemical energy storage power station in Guangdong can provide the power grid with various auxiliary services such as peak shaving, frequency regulation, backup, black start, and renewable energy consumption. It effectively improves the power grid regulation capacity and power supply reliability in the eastern Guangdong region, enhances the consumption capacity of renewable energy such as offshore wind power and photovoltaics, and provides strong support for regional energy structure optimization and green, low-carbon development. Simultaneously, the project holds great significance in new-type energy storage technology innovation, domestic equipment application, and engineering demonstration. It is one of China’s important demonstration projects for the engineering application of 100-megawatt-level semi-solid-state lithium-ion and sodium-ion hybrid energy storage technology.

Other participants included Benjamin Yue, Principal Advisor to CEM Executive Committee; Jeff Jiang, Director of CEM Generation Department; Shi Shihong, Deputy Chief Engineer of GEDI; Chen Lei, General Manager of GEDI’s Hong Kong Subsidiary, and Huang Huiyu, General Manager of GEDI’s Macao Subsidiary, among others.
