CEM, CSG and CLP prepare for the second term of “Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Power Industry Summit”

28 March 2012, Macao

With the implementation of the “12th Five-Year Plan” and the signing of Guangdong-Macao Cooperation Framework Agreement, the development and integration of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao have been sped up. In view of the escalating demand on power services due to the burgeoning regional development, there is a need to work out a better blueprint for the power supply in the long term. Proposed by China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd (CSG) last year, three major power industry suppliers of the three regions including CSG, CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP) and Companhia de Electricidade de Macau – CEM. S.A. (CEM) take turns to hold the “Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Power Industry Summit” regularly each year, in order to provide a platform for the top management of the power companies to meet regularly for exchange, thus strengthening the communication and cooperation.

The first term of the “Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Power Industry Summit” was hosted by CEM in September 2011. A Memorandum of Understanding was jointly signed by three parties to establish the high-level visits and the communication and liaison mechanism among the three parties. The cooperation of the three parties would further be strengthened under the principle of “achieving an equal and win-win situation, complementing each other with relative advantage”, prompting the prosperous social and economic development among the three areas.

To plan for the second term of “Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Power Industry Summit”, the first preparatory meeting was held at Guangzhou Power Supply Bureau today, with China Southern Power Grid International Department Deputy Director Wang Lin, CLP Corporate Development Group (Corporate and Community Relations) Deputy Director Julian Lam, CLP Guangzhou Rep Office Chief Representative Grace Qu as well as CEM Advisor to Executive Committee Iun Iok Meng, Communications and Public Affairs Senior Manager Cecilia Nip and Manager Jaclyn Iun attending the meeting. The representatives decided to organize the second term of the “Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Power Industry Summit” in Yunnan in May.

Iun Iok Meng expressed that Macao’s economy is growing rapidly in recent years, and it is of great importance for CEM to provide a reliable power supply for the region. It is an issue valued and affirmed by its industry peers. Construction of the second 220kV Lotus Interconnection with GPG between the Cotai Strip and Hengqin Island will be energized in 2012. It will provide an additional 700 MVA capacity. By holding the summit regularly, it will have a forward-looking influence on the long-term power supply, whether it is for Macao or all three regions of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao.
