"Macau Energy Saving Activity" achieves cumulative carbon reduction of over 180 million kilograms in 17 years, equivalent to planting approximately 8 million trees
Macau, 25 March 2026
Co-organized by Companhia de Electricidade de Macau (CEM) and the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA), the "Macau Energy Saving Activity" has been held for the 17th consecutive year. In active alignment with the national "Dual Carbon Goals" and in support of the "Macau Long-term Decarbonization Strategy," the Activity aims to encourage Macau residents, hotels and property management industry to save energy and reduce carbon emissions, jointly promoting green development. The Activity received support and co-organization of General Union of Neighbor Association of Macao, Macau Hoteliers and Innkeepers Association as well as Property Management Business Association of Macau. An Award Ceremony was held this afternoon at the Macau Tower Convention and Entertainment Centre.
Guests attending the Award Ceremony included: Chan Chi Kin, Acting Head of DSPA Environment Publicity and Education Division; Chan Ka Leong, Director of General Union of Neighbor Association of Macao; Wong Lai Mei, Vice President of Macau Hoteliers and Innkeepers Association; Sit Un Na, Director of Property Management Business Association of Macau; Vong Kok Seng and Raymond Wong, President and Vice President of CEM Customer Liaison Committee; Ng Kin Wai, Lee Koi Ian, Lei Ka In, Du Yun, Yuan Han Jun, Leong Meng Ian, Ada Chan, Ieong Weng Seng and Ieong Ka Wai, Members of CEM Customer Liaison Committee; Benjamin Yue, Principal Advisor to CEM Executive Committee; Edmond Etchri, Advisor to CEM Executive Committee and Chris Chao, Director of CEM Customer Services Department.
The results for each category of this year’s activity were finalized by a judging panel composed of professionals, including: Maggie Lei, Officer of Consumer Rights and Interests Protection Department of Macau Consumer Council; João Ramos, President of Macau Energy Saving Association; Cheang Io Tung, Director of Macau Electromechanics Professionals Association; Andy Tam, Standing Director of Macau Association of Building Contractors and Developers and Tomas Leong, Deputy Director of Macau Association of Consumers of Public Utility Companies.
At the Award Ceremony, Benjamin Yue stated that CEM has deeply cultivated education on energy conservation and environmental protection through diverse activities. Whether it is the creative "EV Trunk Eco Market," the "Clean Energy City Challenge" that inspires students' potential, or energy-saving seminars held within communities, these initiatives have successfully engaged citizens at various levels to participate in energy saving and carbon reduction. Last year, CEM began establishing its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) management framework to integrate ESG concepts into corporate strategies and daily decision-making. Regarding the promotion of green energy applications, CEM has not only signed Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with China Southern Power Grid International Co., Ltd. and the six integrated resort and leisure enterprises but also purchased Green Electricity Certificates (GECs) corresponding to 2,250 MWh of green electricity to offset carbon emissions from CEM Building. Furthermore, CEM is seeking green building certifications for several new substations, such Tai On substation, Barra substation and Macau Power Station substation. Tai On substation is also equipped with solar photovoltaic panels featuring a sun-tracking system, which is expected to generate 150,000 kWh of electricity annually.
Last year, a total of 48 hotels and nearly 500 buildings participated in the "Macau Energy Saving Activity." Comparing electricity consumption from four consecutive billing months (July to October) with the same period in 2024, “Residential Building Public Facilities Group Champion - Edf. Fai Tat BL.1" reduced its consumption by 45.7% during the activity. “Hotel Group A Champion - Man Va Hotel” and “Hotel Group B Champion - Emperor Hotel” saved over 21% and 18.4% of electricity respectively. Together with the participants of the "5% Energy Saving Action" lucky draw, all participating parties collectively saved over 6 million kWh of electricity during last year’s activity. Over the 17 years, a cumulative total of over 400 million kWh of electricity has been saved during the activity, reducing more than 180 million kilograms of carbon emissions*, which is equivalent to planting approximately 8 million trees^.
“Energy Saving Concept Award winner – Galaxy Macau” were invited to share their energy-saving measures at the Award Ceremony. Jeremias Chan, Facilities Management Senior Manager of Galaxy Macau stated that Galaxy Macau (GM) has long been committed to sustainable development and supports Macau’s vision of becoming a green, low‑carbon city. Following the principle of “Smart Design, Efficient Operations,” Phase III of GM designed with sustainability at its core and has received multiple green building certifications. The Galaxy International Convention Center incorporated highly efficient “Energy Center”, advanced HVAC systems, and vertical green walls to enhance energy efficiency and environmental quality. Operational measures include the use of iPaint roof coating for passive cooling by reflecting solar radiation, as well as energy‑saving strategies for large events and non‑event days. The Galaxy Arena is fully equipped with IoT sensors integrated with the Building Management System (BMS) for real‑time monitoring of indoor environments and equipment performance, supporting dynamic energy‑saving strategies and enhancing operational efficiency.
