2025 CEM Rummikub Competition promotes intergenerational inclusion from ages 6 to 97

Macau, 18 October 2025

Companhia de Electricidade de Macau - CEM, S.A. (CEM) once again partnered with Macau Federation of Trade Unions and General Volunteers Association of Macao to successfully hold the fourth edition of Rummikub Competition today (18th) at the Macau Fisherman’s Wharf Convention and Exhibition Centre. This event aims to promote social inclusion, enhance public awareness and understanding of the hearing-impaired community, and raise funds for the Macau Deaf Association.

Since its inception, Rummikub Competition has consistently attracted enthusiastic participation from individuals of all ages. This year, entering its fourth edition, the event has seen a remarkable response, with nearly a thousand participants enrolled. The “School Group” received enrollments from 37 schools, ultimately selecting 40 teams to compete through a draw. The number of participants in the “Open Group” exceeded expectations, surpassing 700 enrollments; hence, 160 participants were randomly selected via computer draw. A total of 320 competitors participated, ranging in age from 6 to 97 years old, fully embodying the spirit of intergenerational inclusion.

The atmosphere on the day of the event was vibrant. In the morning’s “School Group” competition, students showcased remarkable focus, demonstrating maturity and wisdom beyond their ages. The afternoon’s “Open Group” competition was equally intense, with participants from diverse age groups and backgrounds competing together, fostering interaction and understanding among them.

To enhance the enjoyment and engagement of the event, this year’s Rummikub Competition has introduced new awards. In addition to the traditional Champion, 1st runner-up, and 2nd runner-up and Merit awards, both groups have added two new awards, namely the Fourth Place and Most Games Won Award. This initiative not only motivated competitors to engage actively but also enriched the competition’s diversity.

The beneficiary of this year’s event is the Macau Deaf Association (MDA). CEM hopes that through this event, various sectors of society will pay more attention to the needs of the hearing-impaired community, promoting acceptance and integration, and collectively constructing a harmonious and inclusive environment. A charity sale area was established on-site, with all proceeds donated to MDA, demonstrating practical support for its work.

During the award ceremony, Jaclyn Iun, Senior Manager of CEM Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Communications Office, expressed gratitude for the support from all parties and the enthusiastic participation of the public, which made the competition a success. She noted the honor of being able to provide substantial support to the MDA. The Open Group saw the widest age range of participants ever, ranging from 6 to 97 years old. Notably, MDA sent 8 hearing-impaired individuals to participate in the competition. Their active involvement exemplified the promotion of inclusion. Moving forward, CEM will continue to collaborate with various sectors of society to drive more diverse and meaningful activities, contributing to the sustainable development and community integration of Macau.

Wong Kam Sun, the Chairman of the MDA, sincerely thanked CEM for its meticulous organization and support in building a “magical bridge” for the community. It brings people together regardless of background and differences, fostering closer interactions and establishing an inclusive bridge for connectivity. He also expressed gratitude to CEM for turning this goodwill into practical actions to support the development of the hearing-impaired community in Macau, demonstrating its care and support for the diversity and inclusion of the community as a public service organization.
