CEM and Labour Affairs Bureau continue to organize “Safety Training for Contractors”

Macau, 11 September 2025

To promote a culture of occupational safety and help contractors’ employees to be more conscious about occupational safety and health, CEM organized the “Safety Training for Contractors” at the Plaza Restaurant on 10 September. The attending guests included Tang Weng Kei, Department Head of Occupational Safety and Health Department of the Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) and Hellen Lok, Director of CEM Human Resources and Sustainability Department. Nearly 100 employees from CEM’s contractors attended the training session, which CEM has been organizing since 2014. With professionals from DSAL and CEM sharing their knowledge and experiences, the training session has been well received by the industry.

Lawrence Sun, Senior Manager of CEM Transmission and Distribution Department, stated in his speech that occupational health and safety is not only a legal requirement but also a core value of corporate sustainability, reflecting the company’s “people-oriented” philosophy. CEM firmly believes that a safe and healthy working environment is essential for enhancing employee productivity and service quality. To this end, the company has established an internationally recognized occupational health and safety (OHS) management system to provide a safe workplace for both employees and contractors. By rigorously implementing relevant policies, CEM systematically integrates safety measures into all business operations and conducts regular OHS training to continuously strengthen its safety culture. Looking ahead, CEM will further refine its risk management mechanisms to minimize potential hazards that could threaten the health and safety of employees, contractors, and the public. The company will also optimize its OHS system to drive continuous improvement, regularly review the operational and safety management system, and promote OHS awareness through diverse initiatives.

The speakers of the training include Sou Kuok Fai, Senior Technician from DSAL, as well as CEM Engineers, Richard Lei from the Transmission and Distribution Department and Kou Sio Wai from the Human Resources and Sustainability Department. The three topics covered were: “Safety in Gas Welding and Flame Cutting,” “Safety Management and Measures for Trenching Work on Public Roads,” and “Improvements Following the Implementation of CEM’s Hot Work Permit System.” Participants found the training session highly informative and practical, expressing great satisfaction with the valuable insights gained.

Every year, CEM organizes different training sessions for employees and the industry with an aim of driving the development of occupational safety and health in Macau. CEM set up the “Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Excellence Awards” in 2008 to acknowledge the efforts of contractors and suppliers in promoting environmental protection and safety at work, and it is the first company in Macau to establish such awards. CEM hopes to join hands with the industry to actively promote occupational safety and health in Macau, while continuing the promotion through various activities and bringing together the efforts of employees and the industry to work towards the vision of zero accidents.
