CEM Fully Mobilizes to Ensure Safe and Stable Power Supply for the 8th Legislative Assembly Election of Macau SAR

Macau, 10 September 2025

To ensure safe and stable power supply during the upcoming 8th Legislative Assembly Election of Macau SAR, Companhia de Electricidade de Macau - CEM, S.A. (CEM) recently implemented a series of preventive and enhanced security measures as planned. Today, Bernie Leong, Chairman of Executive Committee of CEM, led management and technical teams in conducting on-site inspections at three key election-related power supply locations, including the Public Administration Building on Rua do Campo, Macao Polytechnic University, and the Taipa Olympic Sports Center. The inspections covered equipment operations, dual power supply switching capabilities, communication and monitoring system status, and emergency preparedness implementation.

Bernie Leong stated that “the Legislative Assembly Election is crucial to Macau’s long-term prosperity, stability, and citizens’ welfare. We must spare no effort in maintaining rigorous work standards and high-level power supply arrangements to provide reliable electricity protection for Macau residents exercising their voting rights.”

CEM began reviewing and optimizing emergency response plans based on data from previous polling stations as early as June this year, while strengthening inspections of relevant customer substations and power supply equipment. After receiving information about current polling stations, CEM updated the emergency plans and inspection schedules for all voting locations. All polling stations’ customer substations are now equipped with dual power supply systems. Should one circuit fail, remote control enables quick and safe switching. On election day, CEM will deploy dedicated standby personnel to ensure an immediate response to any emergencies. CEM has also strengthened overall equipment inspection and maintenance operations to further enhance power grid safety and stability.

As several major events are scheduled for the end of the year, including the 15th National Games (Macao Competition Zone), the 13th Forum of Presidents of the Supreme Courts of Justice of Portuguese-Speaking Countries and Territories, and the celebrations for the 26th anniversary of Macau’s return to the motherland, CEM will continue increasing inspection frequency for key transmission lines and substation facilities, while dynamically adjusting risk classifications based on weather conditions and external construction factors. Should special circumstances arise, tiered emergency response procedures will be activated, with close coordination maintained with relevant government departments to ensure overall power supply safety and stability. Simon Young, Director of CEM Transmission and Distribution Department (Power Network Management) and Kyle Lei, Functional Head of Customer Substation & Electricity Connection Unit of Transmission and Distribution Department along with other relevant personnel, accompanied the inspection.
