CEM conducts joint and internal typhoon drills to prepare for typhoon season

Macau, 23 April 2025

As the typhoon season approaches, Companhia de Electricidade de Macau - CEM, S.A. (CEM) has organized two joint typhoon drills this month in collaboration with Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SME) and Macao Water in order to enhance its ability to cope with severe weather and extreme situations such as typhoons. Additionally, an internal drill was held yesterday with more than 100 personnel participating. These drills aim to strengthen communication and cooperation among departments, enhance preparedness for the typhoon season, and ensure safe and stable electricity supply for citizens during typhoons.

The drills simulated various emergency scenarios arising from a typhoon, including unexpected power outages affecting critical infrastructure and operational departments, as well as varying degrees of failure in power supply facilities. CEM activated pre-defined emergency plans according to different situations, testing the feasibility of these plans and identifying areas for improvement, thereby continuously enhancing the ability to respond to emergencies and refining the electricity emergency response mechanism. They also deployed mobile generators on-site to ensure the normal operation of power supply systems for critical infrastructure.

After the conclusion of each drill, CEM conducted review meetings to gather feedback from participants, assess the implementation of emergency mechanisms, and discuss the challenges encountered during the drills. This process aims to optimize and develop more comprehensive emergency plans, thereby improving the stability of the power supply system. The drills not only enhanced internal crisis response capabilities but also fostered close interdepartmental collaboration, significantly boosting Macau’s ability to respond to natural disasters and ensuring the safety of citizens’ lives and property. Furthermore, CEM urges citizens to prepare for typhoon season in advance. Residents can follow CEM’s Facebook fan page and WeChat for the latest power supple information.
