CEM actively pushes forward smart meters to help build a smart city
Macau, 4 August 2022
To accelerate the realization of the important goal of the Macau SAR Government to build a smart city, Companhia de Electricidade de Macau - CEM, S.A. (CEM) has been continuously investing resources to develop smart services comprehensively in recent years, including promoting the application and development of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). As of July 2022, CEM has installed more than 100,000 smart meters, covering different types of customers such as residential, commercial and industrial, accounting for nearly 40% of the total number of customers. Among them, 60% of the smart meters have completed automated remote meter reading tests and are used for metering and billing.
At the same time, CEM will also install smart meters in 2,200 customer substations across Macau for closer load monitoring of the low-voltage power supply network. Through the use of smart meters, CEM can use big data to optimize power grid management, enable proactive outage notification, instant monitoring of abnormal power consumption, as well as analyze grid losses and loads, etc.
The use of smart meters was highlighted earlier in the pandemic. In addition to reducing the risk of infection for field staff, it can also reduce estimation of power consumption and issue bills based on actual electricity consumption readings. On the other hand, CEM is studying the use of real-time data to streamline service processes, including real-time power reconnection, enabling the power supply service remotely, etc., hoping to reduce the time required for the processes and bring customers a more convenient service experience. In the future, the time required for the application of meter installation will be significantly shortened from the original 3 working days to within the same day.
CEM will continue making every effort to promote the replacement of smart meters and cover the entire Macau by 2025 to help develop an efficient smart city.
