The smart streetlight at the campus of University of Macau

CEM and University of Macau Co-organize Smart Streetlight Innovation Challenge for Youth

Macau, 19 July 2020

The construction of “smart city” is one of the important objectives in the “Macau SAR Five-Year Development Plan”. Making use of smart streetlight to collect environmental information is an important component of smart city development. As a public utility company responsible for supplying power and managing public lighting, CEM has been working closely with the Government to build Macau into a smart city providing intelligent services for its residents. Smart streetlights were installed at Rua de D. Belchior Carneiro, Avenida da Saúde at the campus of University of Macau and Avenida da Amizade for testing in mid-2019. Each streetlight is multifunctional, with equipment such as LED lamp, environmental sensor, camera, 4G/5G micro base station for communications, public information display monitor, tourism information interactive screen and public information mini-speaker and EV charging station, etc.

To enhance Macau students' awareness and participation in Macau’s smart city construction, CEM and the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City of University of Macau jointly organize the “2020 Smart Streetlight Innovation Challenge for Youth”, with the Centre for Science and Engineering Promotion of University of Macau as co-organizer.

The Challenge is divided into two categories - “Outlook Design Group” and “Technical Solution Group” and targets on Macau secondary 2-6 students in the 2020/2021 school year. Applicants can apply individually or in group of not more than 3 members. Entries of “Outlook Design Group” are required to provide a design drawing for the smart streetlight accompanied by an explanatory note with respect to the location, surrounding views, cultural characteristics, and functional features of the smart streetlight. Participating students of “Technical Solution Group” should study the latest technological development of smart streetlight and leverage on their innovative ideas to put forward an original smart streetlight technical solution adapted to the specific characteristics of Macau. The solution could focus on designing the overall functions of smart streetlight or certain function modules of smart streetlight, with the purpose of coordinating the development of smart city based on the actual needs of Macau.

One champion, one first runner-up and several second runner-ups will be awarded in each category. The winners of each category will receive cash prizes, champion: MOP5,000; first runner-up: MOP3,000; second runner-up: MOP1,000. The results will be announced in December 2020.
