In a bid to strengthen close communication with the electromechanical engineering industry and allow the industry to better understand customer services from CEM, Companhia de Electricidade de Macau – CEM, S.A. (CEM) recently held a Seminar at CEM Building. The objectives of the Seminar were to explain the electricity supply application procedures and the development plan for local transmission and distribution power network as well as receive views and opinions from the industry. Around 30 attendees from the Macau Association of Building Contractors and Developers, Macau Electromechanics Professionals Association and Macau Construction Association attended the Seminar.

At the Seminar, CEM Customer Services Department Metering Services Management Engineer Dave Leong explained the application procedures and important points to note for the subscribed demand increase and the replacement of low-voltage main switchboards. Transmission and Distribution Department Senior Manager Billy Chan introduced the overall condition and future development of Macau’s transmission and distribution power network, while the Customer Substation and Electricity Connection Senior Engineers Richard Lei and Valdemar Lopes presented the application procedures of electricity supply in buildings, electric vehicle charging system and photovoltaic system.

Representatives of associations attended the Seminar included Macau Association of Building Contractors and Developers Vice President Mak Man Sun, Macau Electrical and Mechanical Professionals Association President Cheang Io Tung and Macau Construction Association Standing Director Austin Kuong.

Dave Leong said electrical contractors applying for subscribed demand increase are required to submit general application documents to CEM. For some individual applications, technical documents are also required, such as a list of electrical equipment and the location drawings of electrical installations, meters, new pothead, main collective switchboard and main low-voltage switchboard. As for the maintenance and repairs of relevant electrical installations, contractors need to provide information including the required working days, proposals and timetables for temporary electricity supply and permanent electricity restoration so that CEM could provide technical supports and temporary electricity supply points. In addition, prior to the maintenance or replacement of public electrical installations, contractors are advised to discuss the date and time to suspend electricity supply with the property management companies or the owners’ committees, and post the related notice three days before the electricity supply suspension to inform the residents about the related arrangement.

Billy Chan introduced the functions of different units of Transmission and Distribution Department, the current overall condition of Macau’s transmission and distribution network and the future development plan. In the short term, CEM is handling the capacity expansion in old districts, developing the asset management certification and management framework, and defining the Smart Grid development roadmap.

Meanwhile, CEM will follow the long-term goals to conduct online asset conditional monitoring to minimize the maintenance works and prolong the equipment life span, as well as to streamline the voltage framework of the transmission and distribution power network to further improve its transmission capacity. He said CEM always attaches great importance to environmental protection and energy conservation, and has been using LED streetlights with better energy-saving effect for public lighting. CEM has replaced 350 streetlights with LED lamps at NAPE area, and will replace 1,600 streetlights on Macau’s three major bridges, Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro and Taipa. Furthermore, CEM is now studying the use of trenchless technologies such as the “horizontal directional drilling method” to minimize the public impact of roadwork due to cable laying. In addition, Richard Lei and Valdemar Lopes further explained the supply application procedures of buildings, the electric vehicle charging system as well as the grid connection technical guidelines of photovoltaic system. They pointed out that when applying for electricity supply for buildings, contractors have to submit relevant architecture and electricity design plans for CEM to analyze and provide technical advice.

A Q&A session was arranged at the Seminar. CEM and the electromechanical engineering industry exchanged views on the related topics, while Advisor to CEM Executive Committee Iun Iok Meng, Customer Services Department Senior Manager Keegan Cheang and Transmission and Distribution Department Senior Manager Billy Chan answered questions from the attendees. Iun Iok Meng expressed his gratitude to the industry for the support of the Seminar. CEM proactively fulfills its corporate social responsibility. The Seminar not only allowed the industry to have a better understanding of relevant application procedures and requirements, but also provided them an opportunity to communicate with CEM’s representatives. In the near future, CEM will continue to organize related seminars in a bid to strengthen the communication and exchange between members in the electromechanical engineering industry.
