CEM invited legislators to visit Coloane Power Station on 28 April, 2014. Legislators in attendance included Vice-President Lam Heong San, Kwan Tsui Hang, Ho Ion Sang, Sio Chi Wai, Au Kam San, Chan Hong, Leong Veng Chai and Song Pek Kei. CEM delegates of the visit included Chief Executive Officer Franklin Willemyns, Executive Directors João Travassos da Costa and Jorge Vieira, Advisor to CEM Executive Committee Iun Iok Meng, Generation Department Senior Manager Ip Kam Veng, Customer Services Department Senior Manager Keegan Cheang, Safety, Health, Environment and Quality Office Senior Manager Edmond Etchri, Communications and Public Affairs Office Senior Manager Cecilia Nip.

In the beginning of the visit, Franklin Willemyns expressed his sincere gratitude to the support of the legislators and was looking forward to keeping close cooperation so that CEM can extensively solicit opinions. The visit mainly introduced CEM’s power generation and supply at present and in the future, as well as heeded opinion from legislators.

CEM Generation Department Senior Manager Ip Kam Veng introduced the principles of Power supply mix in Macau and the local power generation status. At present, Macau has adopted power sources diversification policy and it has three diversified power sources, including imports from mainland, fuel oil generation (CEM Coloane-A Power Station and Macau Power Station) as well as natural gas power generation (CEM Coloane-B Power Station). Power sources diversification features flexibility. If one power source breaks down, it will immediately be replaced by another power source.

Ip Kam Veng also explained the role of CEM in securing the power supply. He believed that local power plants must be reserved to ensure the stability of power supply in Macau. He pointed out that in 2004, the power purchased from the mainland only took up 7% of Macau’s total power consumption, but the ratio jumped to 92% in 2013. The mainland can supply Macau with sufficient and stable power, but higher degree of dependence also means higher risk.

Legislators in attendance agreed that the visit helped enhance knowledge of CEM’s facilities and recognize the future electricity consumption growth in Macau. Legislators also expressed their concerns over the stability and reliability of Macau’s power supply and actively gave valuable feedback.
