The Macau Energy Saving Contest jointly organized by CEM and GDSE aims to enhance public awareness on energy conservation, encourage commercial and residential customers to put energy conservation and emission reduction into practice, and actively promotes environmental protection to the public. This year’s co-organizers include the General Residents Association of Macau, Macau Property Management Business Association and Macau Hoteliers & Innkeepers Association.

Press conference of Macau Energy Saving Contest was held on 8 Apr 2014 and chaired by Echo Lio, GDSE Senior Technician, Lei Chi Fong, Vice President of CEM Customer Liaison Committee, Simon Wong, Vice Director of General Residents Association of Macau, William Yong, Vice President of Macau Property Management Business Association of Macau, as well as Advisor to CEM Executive Committee Iun Iok Meng, CEM Customer Services Department Senior Manager Keegan Cheang and CEM Communications and Public Affairs Senior Manager Cecilia Nip. The six-month contest will be launched in May. Comparison will be based on the six consecutive billing months of electricity consumption from May to October 2014 with the same period in 2013, and the participating entities and customers who save the highest percentage of energy and pass the assessment will be named the winners. The contest will include three categories: Residential Group, Public Building Facilities Group and Hotel Group. All categories are now open for registration.

Iun Iok Meng said that the “Macau Energy Saving Contest” has saved a total of more than 50 million kWh of electricity in five years since its launch in 2009, adding that the results are remarkable. As summer is approaching, Macau will also enter an electricity consumption peak. The waste of electricity will place a large burden on the environment, CEM hopes to arouse public attention to energy conservation and encourage business and residential customers to work together on energy saving via the “Macau Energy Saving Contest”, in a bid to contribute to Macau’s environment.

Keegan Cheang said CEM has always been devoted to promoting energy efficiency and energy saving through various channels and in various forms. Previously customers that participated in the Hotel Group and Public Building Facilities Group of Macau Energy Saving Contest successfully achieved the goal of energy saving through substituting energy-saving devices and enhancing staff training. This not only saved their operating costs but also made them responsible corporate citizens who lead energy saving and carbon reduction. At the meeting, Keegan Cheang introduced the criteria for participation in the Hotel Group and Public Building Facilities Group. The Hotel Group will include three categories based on different rates of power, with Champion, 1st runner-up, 2nd runner-up, and Excellence awards to be presented in each category. This year, for the Hotel Group, the “Energy-saving Concept” award will be retained to encourage participating hotels to develop innovative energy-saving measures.

Cecilia Nip stated that “Residential Group” has been added to the contest since 2012, inviting all the residential customers to save energy. The winners of the contests in 2012 and 2013 saved up to 69% and 55% of electricity respectively. Just by making appropriate changes to their habits, the participating families were able to save energy and money while contributing to environmental protection. At the press conference, Cecilia Nip introduced the application method and rules of the “Residential Group” category. Cash prizes for winners of Champion, 1st runner-up, 2nd runner-up in “Residential Group” will be increased to MOP 5,000, MOP 3,000 and MOP 2,000 respectively. In addition, five Excellence Awards will be presented with cash prize of MOP 1,000 each. A jury is formed to ensure the fairness of the contest and make the final judgment. Invited judges includes Lewis Chan, Macau Consumer Council Executive Committee Member, João Ramos, Chairman of Macau Energy Saving Association, Chan Veng Iun, Vice Director of Macau Association of Consumers of Public Utility Companies, Cheang Io Tung, President of Macau Electromechanics Professionals Association and Andy Tam, Standing Director of Macau Association of Building Contractors and Developers. The results of the contest will be announced in January 2015 and an award ceremony will also be held by then.
