CEM holds the Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Excellence Awards Presentation Ceremony

In order to encourage contractors and suppliers to deliver the best performance and stay vigilant at any time, Companhia de Electricidade de Macau - CEM, S.A. (CEM) set up “Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Excellence Awards” since 2008. The recognition ceremony was held today at Macao Tower Convention & Entertainment Centre, to recognize the performance of contractors, suppliers, as well as employees.

Officiating guests attending the ceremony included legislator Mak Soi Kun, Deputy Director of Labor Affairs Bureau, Teng Nga Kan, representative from Environmental Protection Bureau Chan Kwok Ho, Head of Office of Health, Safety and Environmental Affairs of the University of Macau, Michael Leung, President of Macao Occupational Health and Safety Association, Kou Chi Leong, Senior Technician of Occupational Safety & Health Department of Labour Affairs Bureau, Chui Ka Shing, Vice-President of CEM Customer Liaison Committee, Lei Chi Fong, Executive Directors of CEM, Joao Travassos, Bernie Leong and Jorge Vieira.

Joao Travassos addressed that CEM has always been strongly committed to promoting environmental-friendly culture, safety awareness and outstanding services. To this end, various projects and measures have been carried out to promote the occupational safety and health culture to achieve the ultimate goal of ”Zero Accidents” in the workplace. CEM is proud to tell everyone that it has successfully achieved this goal in 2012. As of today, CEM hits a record of zero accidents for more than 700 days, and all the supporting departments and offices reached a record of no absence and occupational injury for over 2,350 days. The decline in the accident rate reflected the success of the projects and events launched by CEM over the years, which have played a positive role in promoting safety within the community.

Looking forward to the future, CEM will continue efforts in promoting environmental protection within the company, and focus on safety and high quality services to maintain superior performance in health and safety. CEM will collaborate closely with business partners to promote occupational safety and environmental protection projects to boost sustainable development in Macau. At last, Travassos gave his congratulations to the award-winning companies and CEM staff, expecting them to continue to make contributions for Macau’s occupational health and safety culture. Travassos also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the judges for their full support for the competition.

The professional judge panel comprised of representatives from the Labour Affairs Bureau, Environmental Protection Bureau, University of Macau, Macau Occupational Safety and Health Association, as well a representative from CEM. The winning enterprises were:

Moreover, CEM regularly holds training courses on occupational safety and health for its staff, and has established awards in a bid to improve the top management and front-line employees’ awareness on environmental protection and occupational safety and health and thus reduce the incidence of occupational accidents.
