CEM Customer Liaison Committee visits the New Campus of University of Macau and CEM 110kV substation

A 25-member delegation of CEM Customer Liaison Committee (CLC) departed for a visit to the development zone on Hengqin Island on 11 Mar. The delegation was led by Vong Kok Seng, CLC President; Lei Chi Fong and Iun Iok Meng, CLC Vice Presidents. Franklin Willemyns, CEM Chief Executive Officer was the Consultant of the delegation. David Sam, Engineering Chief Officer and Jacky Vong, Civil Engineer of Infrastructure Development Office (GDI); Peng Jun Chairman of the Board of Guang Dong Nam Yue Group Construction Co., Ltd. warmly welcomed the delegation and introduced the Hengqin projects. The delegation departed from Lotus Border to Hengqin at 10:00a.m. They visited the new campus of University of Macau and CEM 110kV substation to learn about the project planning, construction as well as the future development blueprint.

David Sam introduced to the delegation that the construction of the University of Macau’s new campus on Hengqin Island marks a significant step forward for the development of hardware facilities for Macau’s higher education, saying not only can it create favorable conditions for the city’s higher education, but also of vital importance for talent cultivation, sustainable development and moderate economic diversification of Macau in the future. The new campus features a layout that highlights the style of modern ecological city. Its main campus has a comprehensive range of facilities and beautiful environment, which can fully meet the demands for academic activities, administrative services, accommodation, sports as well as cultural & health activities. Covering an area of approximately 940,000 square meters, the new campus is 20 times larger than the current campus of the University of Macau. It can accommodate approximately 10,000 students in the short term, and 15,000 students in the medium to long term.

Franklin Willemyns stated that CEM has been supporting Macau SAR Government and the University of Macau for the development of the new campus on Hengqin Island since 2011. The construction of the electrical infrastructure for the University of Macau new campus is an important milestone for CEM. A new 110kV substation has been built together with 2X50MVA transformer. Smart Grid solutions have been adopted in this project including a Close Ring configuration with a third-leg connection that provides the highest reliability.

Rossi Chau, Engineering and Business Management Senior Engineer of Network Planning, Design and Construction Department gave introduction of the substation. Besides the primary substation, CEM also established a MV and LV distribution network with Smart Grid infrastructure that could bring more benefits to the electric power system, including a MV close ring, around 40 customer substations (PT) with 89,000 kVA installed capacity, one Switching Station, and Automatic Metering Infrastructure. The project began in 2011, with the substation and 20 PTs completed in 2012. The whole project is expected to be completed by the 2nd quarter this year.

Following the visit, Vong Kok Seng, on behalf of the CLC, thanked GDI for its strong support for the activity. He encouraged CEM to organize more similar activities in the future so that members of the Committee could have better understanding of new development and provide more valuable comments to CEM on improving customer services.
