CEM pioneers to organize for the first time in Macao the ‘SHE Experience Sharing Workshop'

In order to stimulate synergies on Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) with Macao based companies, CEM took the initiative to organize for the first time in Macao a ‘SHE Experience Sharing Workshop’ on 28 November at CEM Coloane Power Station. Nearly 20 companies and institutions with more than 50 professionals and management representatives joined.

The ‘SHE Experience Sharing Workshop’ was organized by CEM with the support of the University of Macau, Hovione PharmaScience Limited, City of Dreams and Galaxy Macau. Presentation included ‘The Planning & Development of the Health, Safety, Environment Management System’ presented by Olivia Wong, Functional Head of Safety and Environmental Affairs of the University of Macau; ‘STOP Program with Incentive Program, and ‘Near-Misses at Hovione’ presented by Denny Chan, SHE Officer of Hovione PharmaScience Limited; ‘The Melco Crown Entertainment SHE Management Experience’ presented by Vince Mossfield, OHS Manager, Mathew Chun, Engineering Manager, Steve Yeung and Kirsten Chang, OHS Assistant Managers of City of Dreams; ‘SHE Implementation and Promotion’ presented by William Chan, Assistant Manager-Health & Safety of Galaxy Macau; and ‘Our Journey to Safety’ presented by Kelvin Kou, CEM Safety, Health, Environment and Quality Office Engineer.

During his welcoming speech, CEM Executive Director, João Travassos da Costa said “We aim at enhancing the cooperation with our business partners and create a safe and high-living standard for Macao citizens. Our common goal must be to reinforce and spread the SHE culture throughout Macao in order to get better global results for the whole Macao community”.

Participants were first invited to tour around CEM Coloane Power Station and have a closer insight on the major infrastructures, technologies and practices in use by the Company. Visitors are generally impressed with major CEM’s achievements in the past years related to the SHE areas. In the last decade, CEM invested over MOP450 million on environmental protection facilities, including SCR system, waste water treatment plants, noise control facilities and air quality surveillance network. CEM’s efforts have resulted in atmospheric emission level having dropped by over 84% since 2001. In July 2012, CEM achieved one year with zero accident. On annual basis, CEM awards the employees who achieve good performances on safety and encourage them to participate in regional safety contests. Similar awards are given to suppliers and contractors aiming at encouraging them to follow good SHE practices. CEM concerns for its staff, customers and the community makes the Company act strategically for obtaining sustainable achievements. The Company believes that having the local companies and institutions working together would be mutual beneficial, as the sharing of experiences will surely contribute to improve performances, and consequently contribute for the sustainable development of Macao.
