Nearly 400 secondary students from 26 schools participated in CEM Solar & Capacitance Model Car Race at Coloane Power Station

Companhia de Electricidade de Macau – CEM, S.A. (CEM) in collaboration with the Macau Youth Federation, the General Association of Chinese Students of Macau and the Youth Center of Macau Federation of Trade Unions, and the technical support of Hong Kong Technology & Renewable Energy Events (HK TREE) organized the 2nd edition of the ‘Solar Model Car Race’, and introduced the 1st edition of the ‘Capacitance Model Car Race’ at Coloane Power Station today.

The event was organized aiming at enhancing Macau students’ consciousness and recognition of the usage of renewable energy, and improving their scientific and technical knowledge and interest in the field. While the ‘Solar Model Car Race’ was targeted to F3-F6 secondary students, the ‘Capacitance Model Car Race’ targeted F1-F2 secondary students. Previously, all participating students joined a half-day workshop with the objective to prepare them for the races.

This year the response from the schools was very enthusiastic. Total 26 schools formed 59 teams to join the ‘Solar Model Car Race’ and 25 teams to participate in the ‘Capacitance Model Car Race’, attracting nearly 400 students and teachers.

The 26 secondary schools participating included Escola Luso-Chinesa Técnico-Profissional, Colégio Mateus Ricci (Secondary), Escola para Filhos e Irmãos dos Operários (Secondary), Escola Nossa Senhora de Fátima, Escola Tong Sin Tong, Colégio do Sagrado Coração de Jesus, Colégio do Sagrado Coração de Jesus - English Section, Escola Secundária Pui Ching, Escola Secundária Pui Va, Escola Secundaria Técnico-Profissional da Associação Geral dos Operários de Macau, Escola Kwong Tai, Escola Kao Yip, Escola Xin Hua, Escola Fong Chong da Taipa, Escola de Aplicação Anexa à Universidade de Macau, Escola Hou Kong, Colégio Yuet Wah - Chinese Section, Colégio Yuet Wah - English Section, Sheng Kung Hui Escola Choi Kou (Macau), Colégio de Santa Rosa de Lima - Chinese Section, Colégio de Santa Rosa de Lima - English Section, Colégio Diocesano de São José (2 e 3), Colégio Diocesano de São José 5 - Chinese Section, Colégio Diocesano de São José 5 - English Section, Escola Keang Peng and Escola Pui Tou.

Teams were required to design and make their own model cars, and compete among themselves for the “Top Three Teams” in both races, plus “The Overall Fastest Lap Award”, and “The Best Model Car Design Award” in the ‘Solar Model Car Race’.

João Travassos, Principal Advisor to CEM Executive Committee, said in his speech during the prizes presentation ceremony, “After viewing the exciting races, I am impressed with all your hard works resulted in outstanding performances in both races. I am pleased that more and more the new generations concern about the use of renewable energies, which is important to protect the planet and our future.”

Atmosphere during the races was fantastic. Students were very enthusiastic to finally see their cars racing, after months of preparation, and compete with students from different schools. The conviviality among the students was also great and teachers hope that this event can contribute to enhance students’ views about renewable energies and interest for more scientific projects.

Final results were: ‘The Best Model Car Design Award” was won by Colégio Diocesano de São José 5 - Chinese Section, received MOP1,000 and one trophy.

“The Overall Fastest Lap Award” was won by Colégio Yuet Wah - Chinese Section who received MOP1,000 and one trophy.

Top three winning teams of “CEM Capacitance Model Car Race were Escola Pui Ching (Champion), Colégio de Santa Rosa de Lima - Chinese Section (1st Runner-up), and Colégio Yuet Wah - Chinese Section (2nd Runner-up) and received MOP2,000, MOP1,500 and MOP1,000 respectively, and a trophy.

Top three teams of CEM Solar Model Car Race were Colégio de Santa Rosa de Lima - Chinese Section (Champion), Colégio do Sagrado Coração de Jesus (1st Runner-up), and Escola Secundária Pui Va (2nd Runner-up) and received MOP3,000, MOP2,000 and MOP1,000 respectively, and a trophy. They will represent Macau to compete in the “Hong Kong TREE 2014”, which is going to be held at the HK Science & Technology Parks on 1 November.
