On 27 October, Companhia de Electricidade de Macau – CEM, S.A. (CEM) in collaboration with the General Association of Chinese Students and Macao Youth Federation, and the technical support of HK TREE held for the first time in Macau CEM Solar Model Car Race. The event took place at CEM Coloane Power Station with the participation of more than 200 students, formed 40 teams from 23 local secondary schools. In the end of the day, the final top three wining schools of the Race were Colégio Diocesano de São José (2 & 3), Escola Tong Sin Tong, and Escola para Filhos e Irmãos dos Operários respectively.
The top three winning teams were then invited to represent Macau to compete in the “HK TREE 2013”, which was held at the HK Science & Technology Parks on 9 November. HK TREE had its first edition held in 2006, being this year the 8th consecutive edition that HK TREE is organized. The event aims at raising the scientific and technological knowledge of the school students, and promoting their awareness of using renewable energy and realizing the important effect of renewable energy for the environment protection. HK TREE is co-organized with Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks, CLP and Electronics Technology Education Association (H.K.).
In this year’s edition of HK TREE more than 180 teams with nearly 800 students participated in the event. For the students representing Macau it was a great experience. Not only they felt honored to be representing the Territory, but also they were enthusiastic to have the opportunity to share their knowledge and creativity with the HK students. They all said they will keep this experience in their memories, and if possible they will try to join the event again next year.
HK TREE is divided into several competition categories: Solar Energy Model Car Competition; Super Capacitor Model Car Competition; Dynamo Smart Car Competition; and Wind Power Generator Design Competition. The Macau teams entered the Solar Energy Model Car Competition, and also in the Solar Model Car Friendly Race - Hong Kong Macau Cup, a special category created for the Macau teams to compete with the best teams from HK.
With the experiences gained from the Macau Race, Escola Tong Sin Tong managed to improve its model car and won the Champion in the HK TREE Solar Energy Model Car Competition. In addition, they hit the record of the fastest lap in the race, an excellent result for the first time to participate in this event. The other three winning teams of HK TREE Solar Energy Model Car Competition were 1st Runner-up St. Paul Secondary School (HK), 2nd Runner-up Lok Sin Tong Yu Kan Hing Secondary School (HK), and 3rd Runner-up HHCKLA Buddhist Ching Kok Secondary School (HK).
In the Solar Model Car Friendly Race - Hong Kong Macau Cup, the HK Team Fastest Lap was won by HHCKLA Buddhist Ching Kok Secondary School while the Macau Team Fastest Lap was won by Escola Tong Sin Tong.
This was indeed a great experience for all the school students involved and a tremendous successful event that CEM expects to organize once again next year with larger scale of participants and co-organizers involved.
