CEM holds Spring Lunch with the Media, and announces ambitious investment plans for the sustainable economic development of Macao

With Lunar New Year around the corner, Companhia de Electricidade de Macau—CEM, S.A. (CEM) hosted a Spring Lunch with the media today. Senior representatives and frontline journalists of Macao media were invited to celebrate the Year of the Tiger with CEM representatives. The attending CEM management included CEM Executive Committee members and department Senior Managers. Director of Government Information Bureau of Macao SAR Government Victor Chan, and CEM Customer Liaison Committee President Vong Kok Seng were also invited to attend the lunch.

During the Spring Lunch, CEM Chief Executive Officer Franklin Willemyns expressed his gratitude to the media for their support to communicate with pubic during the past year. He said that CEM will continue to maintain close cooperation with the media, and that CEM also expects the media to put forward valuable suggestions.

Franklin Willemyns indicated that CEM has strengthened the power distribution network and invested over MOP 800 million last year in order to support the sustainable development of Macau economy and fulfill demands of the public.

Meanwhile, CEM started a batch of large infrastructure projects in 2009. The construction of these projects will be finished in 2011. The projects include:

 A new 66-kV substation in the North District to fulfill power demand growth;  A new 220-kV substation in Cotai Strip to connect the second interconnection with Guangdong PowerGrid, in order to achieve greater transmission capacity and higher reliability of power supply;  A 220-kV backbone cable to connect two 220-kV substations.

These projects as well as other investments planned in 2010 will amount to MOP 951 million.

In addition, on the aspect of improving customer services, CEM opened the Taipa Customer Service Centre by the end of last year and provided residents and merchants at Taipa with full customer service. The centre has been well-received by the public since opening.

CEM has held a series of cultural activities since last June to celebrate PRC 60th anniversary and Macau 10th anniversary together with Macao residents, including 23 exhibitions of photography, calligraphy and graphic design. These activities won warm appraisal from the citizens. More than 1,000 guests were invited to attend and more than 50,000 citizens visited the exhibitions.

Furthermore, the “Energizing Tour” that was held to increase CEM’s transparency and invited the public to invite citizens to visit the Coloane Power Plant and experience green energy starting June 2009. It was received with great enthusiasm by the public and achieved better-than-expected results. Nearly 2,500 Macao residents visited CEM’s power plant. All of CEM’s departments sent voluntary employees to participate in the “Energizing Tour” and more than 70 employees joined the reception work, fully reflecting CEM’s devotion to warmly receive citizens and care for the communities.
